Life is stressful enough without having to worry about how you are going to get around. If you are facing repossession, you may be wondering if it is time to dust off your 10-speed. Before you start panicking, let’s look at some steps that you can take to stop repossession.
The first thing you need to do is relax. Even if the repossession does happen, it is not the end of the world. It may be a major inconvenience for a while, but life goes on. Remember – we can show you how to buy a car with bad credit. Now, let’s move on to things you can do to avoid needing to get a new car!
The number one key to avoiding repossession is to communicate. I know that sounds simple, but having worked in the car finance industry I can tell you that this is the key. You would be shocked at how many times I’ve seen repossessions stopped just because someone was diligent about communicating with their lender.
Every company has their own policies about what it will take to stop repossessions, so there is no hard and fast rule as to what it is going to take. But, you will never know the ways that they might be able to help you unless you communicate. If you can make some sort of payment, it may be enough to get the repossession stopped. Remember – your car lender does not want you car. Quite simply, repossessing your vehicle is only a way to minimize the amount of money that they stand to lose. What they really want is to get your account back into good standing. This means that if you are able to meet them half-way, chances are they will be willing to work with you.
They may be able to accept a partial payment, delay payments or defer payments. If they are being especially cooperative, you may even try to see what they can do about how the late payments are reporting on your credit bureau. (Although this doesn’t really qualify as a credit repair secret, most people don’t understand that very often collection agents have the ability to negotiate how your account is reporting to the credit bureaus. Not every company gives their employees this authority so if they don’t go for it don’t push too hard. Remember, your first goal is to stop repossession.
When you contact the lender, remember to be calm, polite and respectful. It is not their fault that you are behind on your payment. If you get someone that is not being helpful, don’t get rude. That is not going to get you anywhere. You may just want to get off the phone and try to call back to speak with someone else. The key is to find someone who you can convince to help you! I have seen collection agents who didn’t care, but I have also seen others who would bend over backwards to help someone in stopping repossession.
Unless you can bring your account current and negotiate to have the late removed, it is going to be some time before you have clean credit.
